GM’s redesigned full-sized pickups are among the most significant vehicles at the show. Their sales success will go a long way toward determining how robust GM’s profits will be over the next few years. In addition to improved fuel economy, performance and utility, GM is banking on a rebound in U.S. housing and construction activity to drive demand for the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. And by opting for three new V-6 and V-8 Ecotec engines with cylinder deactivation rather than smaller, turbocharged engines, GM is counting on buyers who still want big displacement and high cylinder counts for power and towing.
