Peugeot has previewed an SUV-styled variant of the brand's recently launched 208 subcompact hatchback with the Urban Crossover Concept.

The concept, which was unveiled at the Beijing auto show, is set to go into production for sale in Europe and Asia as a competitor in the growing market for small SUV-styled cars.

A production version likely will join the 208 lineup instead of a station wagon variant of the 208. Peugeot decided not to replace the 207 wagon.

The 4140mm-long concept's sporty design is intended to appeal to young city dwellers, Peugeot said. The concept was styled by Peugeot's design studios in Paris, Shanghai and Sao Paulo.

The Urban Crossover Concept's flared arches and sculpted fenders give the car a low, wide stance.

Peugeot said it wanted to combine its expertise in small cars with the success of the 3008 compact-sized crossover. The Beijing concept merges "these two areas of excellence," the company said in a statement.

The Urban Crossover Concept will make its European debut at the Paris auto show in September.
