German supplier Mahle to double size of r&d center in China

German supplier Mahle GmbH is more than doubling the size of its r&d center in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

The expanded center is due to open in November.

After the expansion, the center will have 16,000 square meters of lab and office space, up from 7,000 square meters. The center will house 450 employees, up from 230 before the expansion.

Mahle, of Stuttgart, has 11 plants in China that produce pistons, piston castings, bearings, filters and other components.

The company ranks No. 30 on the Automotive News Europe list of the top 100 global suppliers with worldwide parts sales to automakers of $6.18 billion in fiscal 2011.
