LONDON – Jaguar's new F-Type has styling details recalling the brand's iconic E-Type, a picture of the car shows.

The F-Type convertible will go on sale next spring as Jaguar's fourth and smallest model.

A picture released by Jaguar ahead of the car's debut at the Paris auto show next week reveals that the F-Type will have a contemporary look but with some E-Type references.

The two-seater recalls the E-Type in details such as the hood-length central bulge, the near-oval of the protruding grille and the falling body line towards the tail.

The F-Type is important to Jaguar because it heralds the brand's return to its sporting tradition after decades spent focusing mainly on luxury sedans.

The new car retains much of the styling of the C-X16 coupe concept unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The front end with its dual side intakes, L-shaped driving lights set within the headlights and chrome-ringed grille is lifted directly from that concept.

The F-Type will cost from about 55,000 pounds (70,000 euros, $86,000) and will compete with the more expensive Porsche 911, a source close to the company told Automotive News Europe.

Three engines will be offered: two versions of the automaker's all-new 3-0-liter V6 supercharged gasoline engine making 340 hp and 380 hp, and a version of the firm's current 5.0- liter supercharged gasoline V8. No output was given for that engine.

Without going into details, Jaguar has said the F-Type's all-aluminum construction produces a low weight figure to benefit both performance and emissions.

A production coupe version is also likely, although that hasn't been confirmed by Jaguar. A hybrid version is also a strong possibility.
