German transmission manufacturer Getrag will establish a joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Corp. to supply the state-owned Chinese automaker.

Under the agreement signed last week, the joint venture will be equally owned by Getrag and Dongfeng, Getrag said in a statement.

The venture, to be based in Wuhan where Dongfeng is headquartered, is due to start production in late 2015. Its first product will be a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

By combining the convenience of a conventional automatic transmission and the high efficiency of a manual transmission, dual-clutch transmissions save fuel, according to Getrag.

Getrag, of Untergruppenbach, Germany, has a plant in Nanchang in east China's Jiangxi province.

Dongfeng, a leading Chinese truckmaker, also has passenger vehicle joint ventures with Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.

It has also started making passenger vehicles under its own brand.
