Volvo said its global vehicle sales fell 5.9 percent in the first ten months, but the decline leveled off in October, thanks in part to the success of the new V40 model.

Volvo said global sales were 347,532 cars through October.

Global sales in October fell 1.8 percent to 34,843, the automaker said on Monday.

In the United States, the brand's biggest single market, year-to-date sales dropped 2.3 percent to 55,789. October sales were down 14.4 percent to 4,196.

In China, the brand's No. 2 market, ten-month deliveries fell 7.3 percent to 36,793. October sales were down 11.7 percent to 3,389.

In Europe, sales through October declined by 10.6 percent to 188,389, but October deliveries rose 3.8 percent to 21,326, boosted by demand for the V40, which sold 6,228 in the region last month.

Volvo has scaled back production because of dropping demand and last month replaced its CEO Stefan Jacoby with Hakan Samuelsson, a former head of German truck maker MAN.
