French glassmaker St. Gobain has opened a new plant in Qingdao, a coastal city in China's Shandong province, according to a report in the IHS Automotive's Supplier Business newsletter.

The $50 million (463 million yuan) plant produces window films and backsheet materials. The factory is located near an existing flat-glass production facility in the city.

Saint Gobain also has a plant in Nanjing and a processing facility in Shanghai.

The new Qingdao plant will gradually increase production until 2014, when it will produce glass to equip 1.5 million vehicles a year.

The factory will double Saint Gobain's automotive glass production in China.
