MUNICH -- Former Volkswagen chief Bernd Pischetsrieder will be the new supervisory board chairman of Munich Re.

Pischetsrieder, 64, has been a board member of the Munich-based insurance group since 2002. He takes up his new role on Jan. 1, succeeding Hans-Juregen Schinzler, 72, who will retire.

Munich-born Pischetsrieder was VW CEO from 2002 to 2006. He left the automaker after clashing with Chairman Ferdinand Piech. During a long auto industry career Pischetsrieder was also BMW CEO from 1993 to 1999.
