DETROIT -- Porsche will extend the three-year contract of its CEO, Matthias Mueller, by one year to October 2014.

Mueller, 59, took over the top job at the sports car maker in 2010 from Wendelin Wiedeking and oversaw the carmaker's integration last August into the Volkswagen Group.

"Everyone involved saw this as a good time to extend the term of my contract," Mueller told Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe at last week's Detroit auto show.

Mueller is expected by some close associates to keep the job for a further four years after the new contract expires, which would allow him to see out the duration of the carmaker's Strategy 2018 plan, which aims to lift sales volumes at the company to 200,000 vehicles by 2018, from 141,000 deliveries last year.
