NSK saves fuel and space in new VW Up

NSK Steering Systems supplies its fuel-saving technology to the new Volkswagen Up. NSK developed the compact electric power assisted steering (EPAS) unit and fitted it to the Up's steering column to save space.
When compared with electrohydraulic steering systems, NSK's technology uses approximately 0.2 liters less fuel per 100km, the supplier says.
The system also automatically centers the steering wheel, which is intended to improve safety and increase convenience for the driver because fewer corrections are required.
NSK manufactures the ready-to-mount steering columns at its plant in Wałbrzych, Poland. The company invested in a new assembly line for the plant before production began.
In addition to the steering system, NSK also supplies the Up's wheel bearings for the front axle and transmission bearings for the minicar's manual and automatic gearboxes.
The Up is built at Volkswagen's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside its sister models, the Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii.
Production of the Up began in August 2011 with assembly of the Seat and Skoda versions starting two months later.
According to IHS Automotive forecasts, output of the Up will peak in 2013 at more than 150,000 vehicles.
