The BMW i3 was a big Web winner during the third quarter. The i3's debut at the Frankfurt auto show last month led to huge increases in coverage via online news stories, Twitter posts and blog mentions, according to a study.

The i3, BMW's first full-electric car, rose to No. 2 in online news coverage in the third quarter from No. 60 during the second quarter, according to UK-based researcher Kantar Media.

The i3 also ranked 8th in both Tweets and blog mentions during the third quarter compared with finishing in 101st place on Twitter during Q2 and placing 113th in blog coverage from April through June, according to Kantar Media, which tracks mentions of vehicles in the different media in five languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

The other big winner during the third quarter was the Volkswagen Golf. The Golf was No. 1 in both online news stories and blog mentions during the quarter.

Kantar Media attributed the top rankings to the world premier of the high-performance 296-hp Golf R at the Frankfurt show as well as the arrival of the battery-powered e-Golf.

Europe's top-selling car also held the top spots in both online stories and blogs during the first and second quarters.

The study's findings are based on 502,400 online news articles, 501,190 Tweets and 303,713 blog posts from July 1, 2013 until Sept. 30, 2013.
