FRANKFURT -- BMW Group said deliveries of Mini, BMW and Rolls-Royce cars rose 6 percent in February to 141,093 as a 29 percent sales increase in China helped offset a slump in European deliveries.

In the first two months, global sales rose 7 percent to 273,999, the automaker said in a statement today.

Group sales fell by 2 percent in Europe last month to 60,321, while in the Americas they were down 1 percent at 45,272. In China, deliveries rose 29 percent to 30,281.

BMW sales and marketing chief Ian Robertson said in the statement that the debut of new models this year such as the 2-series Active Tourer and 4-series Gran Coupe would help extend sales growth at the carmaker in 2014.

Sales of the group's core BMW brand rose 9 percent in February to 124,839. Through February, brand deliveries increased 9 percent to 242,017.

Sales at Mini brand were down 14 percent to 15,975 last month, ahead of a model changeover to a new generation hatchback that is due to go on sale later this month.

Audi tops BMW brand in 2-month sales

BMW, the world's biggest premium carmaker since 2005, is working to stave off challenges by second-ranked Audi and No. 3 Mercedes-Benz. Both have vowed to pass BMW for the global luxury-car sales lead by the end of the decade.

Last week, Audi said sales rose 7 percent in February to 117,500, while Mercedes brand sales grew 17 percent to 104,968 in the same period.

Through February, Audi edged past BMW to claim the No. 1 position with 242,400 sales, a rise of 9 percent and a lead of 383 vehicles over BMW. Mercedes sold 215,753 vehicles in the first two months, a rise of 17 percent.

Last year, BMW reported brand sales of 1.66 million, compared with Audi's 1.58 million and Mercedes brand's 1.46 million.
