Audi TT, minicars on the rise

The Audi TT, Renault Twingo and Peugeot 108 were big Web winners during the first quarter. The debuts of the cars at the Geneva auto show led to huge increases in online news coverage. The quarter’s top performers, however, were the Volkswagen Golf and Land Rover’s Range Rover, according to a study.

The third-generation of Audi’s iconic TT coupe rose to No. 13 in online news coverage in the first quarter from No. 49 during the fourth quarter of 2013, according to UK-based researcher Kantar Media. The Renault Twingo minicar climbed to No. 15 from 90th place during the time period while the Peugeot 108 minicar rose 259 places in the ranking to No. 22, which was the biggest leap during the quarter of any vehicle in the four different media tracked by the researcher.

Twitter champ

The Twitter champion of the first quarter was the Range Rover, which edged out the Audi R8. The model that made the biggest improvement when it comes to Tweets, however, was the Peugeot 308. The compact rose 25 spots to No. 24 in the ranking helped largely by being named 2014 European Car of the Year in early March.

The Volkswagen Golf started 2014 the way it ended 2013, as the king of the European Internet world. The Golf ranked No. 1 in online stories, blog mentions, and other social media feedback as well as No. 3 in Tweets during the first quarter, according to Kantar Media, which tracks mentions of vehicles in the different media in five languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Kantar's first-quarter findings were based on 57,909 online news articles, 687,027 Tweets, 108,090 blogs and 979,881 posts on other social media including publicly available pages on Facebook as well as image and video sites such as YouTube.

The data was collected from Jan. 1, 2014 until March 31, 2014.
