Mercedes sales rise 14% in April on C-class, compacts

In its first full month of sales, the GLA crossover helped lift deliveries of Mercedes compact cars by 20 percent in April.

FRANKFURT -- Daimler said global deliveries of its Mercedes-Benz premium brand rose 14 percent in April to 133,077 vehicles helped by the newly launched C class and the automaker's compact lineup.

"We are posting a double-digit percentage growth in sales for the tenth consecutive month, among others also due to the great success of the new C Class," Ola Kaellenius, Mercedes sales chief, said in a statement today.

Four-month deliveries at the brand rose 15 percent to 507,353.

Sales were also driven by demand for the E-class sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible, the company said in the statement. In March, the GLA crossover joined the CLA and B-class and A-class models in the automaker's compact lineup, helping to lift its sales in the segment by 20 percent last month.

Mercedes made gains in all its major markets in April, with deliveries in China rising 38 percent to 22,438 and sales in Mercedes’ No. 1 market, the United States, rising 10 percent to 25,887. In Europe, Mercedes' gains reflected an overall revival in the market as brand sales rose 10 percent to 62,868, led by a gain of 3 percent in Germany, where sales rose to 24,430.

Sales of Daimler's Smart brand dropped 4 percent last month to 8,392. In total, Mercedes-Benz Cars, which includes Smart, sold 141,469 vehicles last month, a rise of 13 percent. Sales in the first four months rose 13 percent to 539,177.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who has a goal for Mercedes to pass Audi and BMW and become the world's biggest maker of luxury cars by 2020, is rolling out 30 new vehicles by the end of the decade, a dozen of which will have no predecessor.
