The latest issue of the Automotive News Europe monthly e-magazine goes live on Monday, July 7.

This month's edition looks at the challenges facing Volkswagen Group as it tries to become the world's largest automaker.

VW has failed to gain traction in the United States and India; it faces higher-than-expected costs from introducing its new MQB architecture; and it has a delicate balance of power among core shareholders.

The challenges risk splitting apart the company once its powerful chairman, the 77-year-old Ferdinand Piech, is no longer there to unite the separate factions under his iron grip.

VW Group is not the only powerhouse looking at ways to make itself stronger. BMW Group CEO Norbert Reithofer says that the world’s largest premium automakers is re-thinking how to stay ahead of Audi and Mercedes-Benz as the sales battle between the three premium brands heats up.

Toyota Europe CEO Didier Leroy is not worried about rival Nissan’s publicly stated goal of passing his company as Europe’s top-selling Asian brand. Leroy puts profit before volume and, after returning European operations to the black, he has earned more independence from Japan to make big decisions. Find out how.

For a look at the future of car retailing in big metropolitan areas, we visited the game-changing Audi City dealership in London.

Our monthly segment analysis focuses on the volume mid-sized sector. Sales in this once-strong segment are poised to fall this year to their lowest level this decade as pressure from premium alternatives mounts.

Our Latest Launches section features reviews of a new interpretation of the coupe-like SUV from BMW, the X4; Honda’s return to Europe’s compact wagon segment, the Civic Tourer; Volkswagen’s family-focused Golf Sportsvan; and Ferrari’s first turbocharged model in 27 years, the California T.
