DETROIT -- The Ram pickup kept Fiat Chrysler’s sales from sliding further than 6.6 percent in April as Jeep sales continued to tumble.
FCA said it sold 177,441 light vehicles in the U.S. last month. The company said its retail sales fell 3 percent from April 2016, and that fleet sales represented 17 percent of its total sales.
The Ram pickup pulled off a major feat in April, topping the Chevrolet Silverado in total U.S. sales for the second consecutive month and the third time in eight months. The pickup’s 7.6 percent sales gain offset slides in sales of Ram’s commercial vans, and allowed the brand to finish up 5.3 percent for the month, making it FCA’s only mainstream brand to finish April in positive territory.
Dodge sales declined 2.6 percent and Chrysler brand sales slipped 3.3 percent in April, despite strong performances by the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Dodge Journey crossover. Dodge Durango and Challenger sales also rose, while sales of the rest of the two brands’ lineups fell in April.
Jeep sales slid for the eighth consecutive month, falling 17 percent from the same month a year ago. Among its lineup, Grand Cherokee sales rose 6.2 percent and Wrangler sales were flat, while sales of the brand’s smaller vehicles fell.
Fiat brand sales declined 18 percent in April.
Among FCA’s premium brands, Alfa Romeo reported 677 sales, including 634 sales of the new Giulia sedan, and 1,265 Maserati sales.
FCA said it finished the month with 545,059 unsold vehicles in inventory, an 80-day supply.
