MADRID - Employment in Spain's auto dealerships is dropping rapidly as secondary dealerships disappear.
Faconauto, the Spanish Car Dealers Association, said the number of main dealerships has remained steady at around 3,000 for the past several years. The number of secondary outlets dropped from 7,757 in 1994 to 6,932 last year.
The big change has been in employment, which fell from 205,000 in 1992 to 133,000 last year.
Faconauto said dealers prepared in the late 1980s and early 1990s for a potential market of 1.5 million cars a year. This year, the market is expected to be about 1.2 million.
