TURIN - Pininfarina will produce 35,000 compact sport-utility vehicles for Mitsubishi, starting in 1999. The contract is the largest signed by an Italian coachbuilder in the past 20 years.
The contract is worth L900 billion ($530 million) in sales annually for Pininfarina.
The new sport-utility will be called Pajero Pinin. It will be designed and engineered by Mitsubishi with dimensions midway between the existing Pajero and the Japanese Pajero Jr.
European content will be about 60 percent. Pininfarina will develop a convertible for Europe.
