MADRID - Former Volkswagen executive Jose Ignacio Lopez heads a group of businessmen interested in buying the former Suzuki-Santana Motors plant in Linares, Spain.
Santana Motor is now controlled by the Andalusian regional government. Suzuki withdrew in 1995. The plant makes Suzuki Vitara and Samurai four-wheel-drive vehicles under license. It plans to build 32,000 vehicles in 1997.
The Lopez group has made one of three serious offers to take over the plant, according to an official.
The plant employs 1,764 workers, down from a peak of 3,000.
Lopez was head of manufacturing and purchasing at Volkswagen before being ousted last autumn.
