IGNACIO LOPEZ, the former Volkswagen AG purchasing chief, was recovering last week in a Spanish hospital from head injuries.
Lopez, 56, was hurt on 8 January when the Audi 80 in which he was a passenger collided with a truck near Madrid. The car had an air bag on the driver's side only.
Doctors in Burgos, Spain, said his condition was improving. He was taken off sedatives and a respirator.
Lopez was forced to resign from VW in 1996 to settle a dispute with General Motors over charges of industrial espionage.
