TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. has no plans to follow Toyota Motor Corp. onto continental Europe with a new plant today, but maybe later.
'We have to strengthen our UK operations first,' said Hiroyuki Yoshino, Honda executive vice president.
Yoshino said that would take about two years to boost annual production from about 110,000 now to 150,000. If Honda then decided to build a new plant, it would be another 18 months before production could begin.
For a product, Hiroyuki Shimojima, Honda senior managing director in charge of worldwide automotive operations, said he would favor a small sport-utility.
'Once the continent accepts our models,' he said, 'then we can consider moving to the continent.'
