DESPITE A poor French market - down by 19.7 percent - PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Renault increased their global sales in 1997.
The figures are 2.1 million cars and light commercial vehicles for PSA (1.21 million Peugeot, 0.89 million Citroen), and 1.83 million for Renault. PSA was up 5.3 percent, Renault gained 2.6 percent.
European sales outside France balanced declines in the home market. PSA increased non-France European car sales by 13.8 percent to 1,026,100 units and Renault by 16 percent to 858,000 units. The best results were in the UK, Italy and Spain.
PSA's non-west Europe sales grew by 26.4 percent to 329,400 units, thanks to growth in China, Malaysia, South America and Eastern Europe. Renault grew by 11 percent in those markets to 300,000 units.
