A SERIES OF VOLKSWAGEN ads intended to amuse French car buyers provoked outrage from the Catholic Church and resulted in an apology and a donation to the charity Secours Catholic. The 10,000 billboards for the new Golf were removed 4 February as planned. The one shown says, 'As soon as he saw the new Golf, Francis was converted.' Another has the Golf saying it 'may be the one everyone has been expecting.' The most controversial showed an interpretation o f the Last Supper. The Jesus figure looks ahead, saying, 'Let us rejoice, my friends, for a new Golf is born.' After a public debate over religious themes in advertising, France's Catholic bishops withdrew their lawsuit against V W and its agency, DDB Needham Worldwide.
