DAIMLER-BENZ celebrated the re-unification of East and West Germany with a reception in Berlin on 2 October 1990.
'We celebrated until midnight with guests from Germany and other countries,' writes Reuter. 'But alcohol and party gossip seemed to push aside the greatness of the occasion.'
Shortly after midnight Reuter's advisor Matthias Kleinert disappeared. Reuter was worried 'because, against his usual habits, he had drunk alcohol and was in a slightly tipsy state. I found him sitting on the lap of (Chancellor Helmut) Kohl's secretary.'
Reuter is not flattering about German Chancellor Willy Brandt. But Reuter concedes he 'might have met him during one of his periods of depression - which he suffered from at several stages in his life, together with a tendency toward alcoholism.'
