Hans Herrmann, a popular Grand Prix race driver, celebrated his 70th birthday on 23 February in Stuttgart. Herrmann drove for Mercedes-Benz during the 1950s and 1960s, and he concluded his career as overall winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970.
Victor Rice (left), chief executive of LucasVarity, unveiled a commemorative bust of Perkins Engines founder Frank Perkins at a ceremony in February. Present at the unveiling was Pat Derby, a Perkins employee for 46 years and new recruit John Byrne. Perkins Engines was founded in 1932 and since then has made around 14 million engines.
