MATRA Automobile may build a new Renault luxury coupe after its contract to produce the Espace minivan expires.
Executive sources in Geneva said the coupe would be based on a future top-of-the-range platform that will be used for successors to the Laguna, Safrane and Espace.
Those models will begin appearing after 2001, probably built at Renault's Sandouville plant.
The low-volume coupe could be produced by Matra in Romorantin, France.
The Espace is now built at Romorantin at a rate of up to 350 units per day.
Matra is looking for a vehicle to replace the Espace after the production contract ends in 2003.
The coupe project 'may be possible,' said Matra Automobile Chairman Philippe Guedon.
'Our priority is to conclude industrial deals in order to keep our plants working.'
A Renault spokesman declined to comment.
