CARROZZERIA BERTONE will build an Astra-based coupe in 18 months. General Motors showed the full-size coupe model for a minute and showed a picture of the cabriolet. The two cars are based on the new Astra platform.
The coupe will debut in August 1999. The cabriolet will follow nine to 12 months later.
Bertone will continue building the current Astra convertible at its Turin factory until the new one debuts.
At full capacity, expected to be reached in 2001, Bertone will make 50,000 units a year of the two cars.
As a guarantee of quality, Bertone has agreed to pay any warranty costs above the levels for Astras built in Germany and the UK.
Opel refused to allow a formal photo session. The brief glimpse was a sign of Opel's aggressive attitude toward the VW Golf, whose coupe is expected in 2000 at the earliest.
