MICRO COMPACT CAR will add two more versions to the Smart next year.
The high-line Smart Passion and an unnamed convertible will join the two models currently being developed, the Smart Pure and Smart Pulse.
'The Smart Passion will have more equipment and a more luxurious interior,' said Lars Brorsen, Micro Compact Car managing director.
Prices will begin at DM16,000 for the Smart Pure and reach about DM20,000 for the Smart Passion.
The seven-month delay in Smart sales ordered by Daimler-Benz boss Juergen Schrempp has created extra costs of about DM300 million.
That addition changes Micro Compact Car's financial plan, said Brorsen. But he said that by 2000, 'we also expect to have a positive cash flow with the Smart.'
Beginning 1 June, dealers will start accepting orders. Brorsen expects to deliver 20,000 Smarts to customers in 1998, far below previous plans.
Smart aims at 130,000 units in 1999 and 200,000 in 2000.
