BREED IS developing a prototype smart airbag system for an unnamed US automaker. It will be delivered within 10 months.
Breed President Fred Musone said the company is also developing the system for a European customer.
The system will verify the presence of a passenger, pinpoint the occupant's location and calculate the likely severity of the crash.
Breed and Siemens will develop the sensors, airbags, inflators, seatbelts and steering wheel.
The r&d agreement is a sign that the auto industry is moving toward deployment of smart airbags.
'Obviously this is a work in progress, and there is no guarantee that we will get the business,' said Musone. 'But we feel good about it.'
