GENERAL MOTORS may develop a medium-sized rear-drive platform for at least four models. It would be used for the Omega in Europe, Cadillac in the USA, Saab in Sweden and Holden in Australia, said Peter Hanenberger, who heads GM International technical development.
'We have four premium makes, and if we take all that volume, we don't have to invest four different times,' said Hanenberger in an interview at the Geneva show.
'There has been a shift in the premium segment to high style. To get a low-cost advantage we decided to go where the Germans are going - high volume and high value without calling them premium cars.'
