BMW Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder attacked the oil industry like a raging bull in a speech to journalists.
'The automotive industry has already invested tens of billions in the development of increasingly complex technology,' he said. 'The one and only way to achieve genuine progress in this sector is for the mineral oil industry to make an appropriate contribution.'
The European Parliament recently voted to give the oil industry until 2005 to reduce sulfur in gasoline to 30ppm and in diesel to 50ppm. 'It is absolutely essential,' he said, 'to reduce the sulfur content in petrol to 30ppm as quickly as possible.'
