DETROIT - Meritor Automotive Inc. is picking up new business by building highly integrated components that advance the concept of modular assembly.
At the SAE Congress and Exposition in Detroit a month ago, Meritor showed a new roof module it is making for the MCC Smart Car and a common door hardware mechanism for the Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Beetle.
Automakers can reduce testing costs by integrating parts into a single component, said Peter Kruger, vice president of marketing.
'The idea is to move away from simple pre-assembled modules to real integration of components,' said Kruger, 'and then you create new products.'
The launch of the Smart Car has been pushed back to October. But Kruger claimed Meritor is already discussing additional roof module programs for other, unidentified, customers.
