Suppliers follow VW, Audi to Brazil
SAO JOSE DOS PINHAIS, Brazil - Audi and VW have pulled 10 suppliers to Brazil to set up beside their new green-field plant. German companies Peguform, Heidemann, Continental and Sekurit are new to Brazil. Those already operating in the country include Krupp, Hella and Inilbra. US based suppliers are Delphi, Tenneco and Johnson Controls.
The new plant will start producing Audi A3 hatchbacks in December 1998, Golf models from May 1999 and the Passat the following year.
New BASF plant
SAO PAULO, Brazil - BASF Coatings is building a new $5.5 million plant to manufacture water-born basecoats for the Brazilian automotive industry.
Dana in Brazil
TOLEDO - Dana has acquired full ownership of Brazilian structural components manufacturer SIMESC-Parish. Dana, which operates 26 plants in Brazil, bought the outstanding 40 percent stake in the company from its joint venture partner, Wiest SA.
JACKSON, Michigan, USA - Hydro Ellay Enfield, part of Norwegian based Norsk Hydro, is building a new plant to meet rising demand for welded tubes. The new plant is expected to be operational by early 1999.
CLEVELAND, USA - TRW Inc has acquired German automotive switch and control manufacturer Pneutron Priesemuth GMBH for an undisclosed amount. Pneutron sales last year were DM36 million ($20 million).
WINCHESTER, UK - Avon Rubber PLC has acquired Cow Polymers, a subsidiary of UniPoly Industrials BV, for more than £10 million ($16.7 million). Cow Polymers, formerly owned by UK conglomerate BTR, supplies technical moldings including air duct hoses and shock absorber caps to Ford, Nissan, Rover and Volvo.
UT in Portugal
POVOA DE LANHOSO, Portugal - UT Automotive has opened its 600-worker plant to supply wire harnesses for the Ford Focus.
BIRMINGHAM, UK - LucasVarity PLC and TRW Inc have formed a joint venture to design, develop and manufacture electric steering systems for cars and light vans. A new company, TRW LucasVarity Electric Steering System, is expected to start initial production in the UK in 2000.
GRAZ, Austria - BASF Coatings has been awarded the silver 'Supplier Award 1997' by Eurostar, the joint-venture company of Chrysler and Steyr Daimler Puch. BASF supplies the complete paint system for Jeep and Chrysler Voyager vehicles produced at Graz.
