THE PEN in Chris Bangle's hand dances over the paper during the press presentations in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Bangle, the chief designer at BMW tries to explain why the new 3 series looks as it does.
Every car has it own face.
In nature, says Bangle, people look for a face that attracts them. It can be smiling, aggressive or soft and gray.
'Car design must also be possible to produce without too high a cost,' Bangle says. 'But it does not have to be easy. For example, the side of the new BMW 3 is in one piece all the way to the taillights. Some manufacturers cut the sheet metal close to the lights to make production easier.'
