PARIS - Claude Lobo says it is a little know fact, but the Ford Focus is 80mm higher than the Escort that it replaces.
Height is important in today's lower-medium and supermini segments, says Lobo, Ford of Europe design director for small and medium vehicles.
He says the Focus does not look much higher because the wheel wells are oval, not circular.
Some inside Ford consider Lobo the father of the Focus' New Edge look. He is credited with launching the design concept when he was in charge of Ford's advanced design studio in the USA.
New Edge debuted on the Ka mini in late 1996.
