TURIN - Fiat plans to reposition Maserati as an Italian Jaguar as it adds a new coupe and plans to re-enteer the USA.
Maserati production has resumed at Chivasso, Italy. The factory was closed in September for refitting after Fiat gave management to Ferrari.
The $60,000 coupe will replace the aging Ghibli this summer. The existing Quattroporte sedan is likely to remain in production for another four years.
The coupe will help Maserati build up annual production to between 8,000 and 10,000 cars within several years. Recent levels have been below 2,000.
'We could build up to around 15,000 units a year in the future,' said a spokesman, if Maserati begins selling in the USA again.
