Bruno Sacco, design director at Daimler-Benz, was interviewed at the Turin auto show by Georg Auer.
Turin has always been the auto show of the designers. Does it still wear that crown?
For quite some time it had lost that character. In the last six or eight years, it is winning back some of this role.
How do you see the role of Turin designers on the international scene?
They have put themselves under high pressure, as they said for the last 40 years that they are the best in the world.
Are they the best?
They are certainly among the best.
Do you sometimes consult them?
We did that once with a product that is now on the market. They delivered good work, but we found our own creation fitted better.
You said at the debut of the Mercedes 190 that if a car gets general approval at the time of its introduction, then it will age very soon. Will that be true of the new Multipla shown by Fiat at Turin?
With the 190 it was like that, but it does not necessarily follow for every car.
