THE AUTO industry accounts for about 30 percent of steel industry revenue in Europe. Carmakers use six million tonnes a year.
'That's about DM5 billion ($2.8 billion) for direct supplies of steel bodies, plus a further DM5 billion for indirect supplies to our partners and component makers,' says Rolf Vogel, managing director of Hoogovens Steel Strip Mill Products in the Netherlands.
Hoogovens is the No. 6 European steel supplier to the auto industry.
The No. 1 supplier is Germany's Thyssen Krupp Stahl, followed by Sollac-Usinor of France and British Steel.
