THE INDIAN market for passenger cars and utility vehicles grew by less than 1 percent in the year ending 31 March. In the previous year growth was 21 percent.
Maruti Udyog dominated the car market, accounting for 83 percent of sales. It sold 345,303 units of the Maruti 800, Omni and Esteem.
Small cars such as the Maruti 800 were the most popular, but sales of large, multi-seat utility vehicles like the Mahindra Armada/Commander range also grew. Mid-sized cars did worst.
Maruti Udyog exported 24,757 vehicles, mainly to Europe. Daimler-Benz also exported 1,330 cars assembled in India to neighboring countries.
