Romanian approved for A-class gears
BUCHAREST - The Mechanical Plant of Cugir in central Romania has been certified as a Tier 2 Daimler-Benz supplier and has been named the sole supplier of gear wheels and hubs for the A-class automatic transmission, said Cugir General Manager Mihi Nicusor.
Cugir had supplied units on a trial basis for more than a year. Cugir invested about $3.5 million in new technologies last year. The first order for 40,000 units had a value of DM1.2 million ($675,000). 'It is possible that a new order of 80,000 parts will come,' said Daimler-Benz spokesman Andreas Waltz.
Omega and Express open tool venture
GATESHEAD, UK - US company Omega Plastics and UK-based Express Engineering have opened a joint venture plant in Gateshead to make tooling for low-volume molding of aluminum parts. The plant can design and make mold tools in two to five weeks, dramatically speeding up the time it takes to build prototype vehicles and other products.
PGK buys firm Centennial
TROY, Michigan - PGK Engineering has bought Centennial Mold Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Pat Kirby, chief executive of parent group PGK Services, expects Centennial's staff of 55 to double within about a year.
PGK will look for alliances and possible acquisitions in France, Germany and the UK in about one year, said Kirby. He predicted PGK's 1998 sales will be around $25 million. PGK offers design engineering and development, program management and production tooling to Tier 1 and 2 suppliers.
Subsidiary PGK Products has changed its name from Millford Manufacturing Co. It provides precision parts, such as ABS components, to Tier 1 suppliers.
Standard in Poland
DEARBORN, Michigan - Standard Products Co. will open its first plant in Poland later this year at Biesko-Biala, near Fiat's assembly plant. The US-based company supplies plastic and rubber sealing products for the Fiat Palio. Fiat is talking with Standard Products about opening a plant in Bursa, Turkey, and possibly in India and Morocco. Standard Products has plants four plants in France and three in the UK.
