SOUTHAMPTON, UK - Durr Systems GmbH and Durr UK will supply electrostatic paint application machines for the primer and enamel spray booths in a new
$7.4 million paint shop being installed by Ford at its Transit van and bus plant at Southampton, UK. Installation and trials are scheduled for early 1999 with production start-up in August 1999. The booths will be equipped to offer a variety of paint colors including metallics.
NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia - Lear Corp. will supply 125,000 sets of seats for the Volga 3110 made by Russian carmaker AvtoGAZ. The US-based supplier will later provide 100,000 seat sets for a new Volga model.
Lear will set up a subsidiary in Nizhny Novgorod to make the seats for AvtoGAZ and for Fiat. Fiat has ordered 150,000 seat sets. The Lear subsidiary will lease AvtoGAZ's seat-making facility and start making its own seats in August.
LIVONIA, Michigan - LucasVarity Light Vehicle Braking Systems will develop and supply a customized braking system for a Chrysler sport-utility. The contract is worth about $50 million a year. Some North American Ford and Honda models will also get similar systems.
MICHELIN SPENT more than a year in collaboration with Ford to develop a tire for the Cougar. 'They developed it to our design without charging us, on the basis that they could then offer it on the market,' said a Ford spokesman. The tire is available for 15-and 16-inch wheels.
