GERHARD FRITZ made many changes to the Smart after he joined the project that in total lowered the center of gravity by 40 to 50mm and added stability. Among the changes:
Traction and stability program. If the yaw sensor feels that the car is going too fast into a corner, it reduces the fuel supply. The version in the A-class brakes separate wheels. The Smart version is said to cost DM100 to DM300 less than the A-class ESP to produce.
Thicker stabilizers. Better control of the wheels during cornering.
Wider wheelbase. Fritz added 16mm between the front wheels, 86mm between rear wheels.
Slower steering. It takes more turns on the steering wheel from stop to stop.
Power brakes. The original did not have them.
Lower seats. By 20mm.
Thinner roof glass. Shaving the thickness from 4.0mm to 3.6mm saved 3.6kg at the top of the car.
Lower chassis. By 18mm.
Wider car: By 64mm.
Heavier: 40kg added.
New tires: Now 175/55-15 (and more negative camber was added to the rear wheels).
In addition, interior noise was reduced and the heating system was made more efficient.
