New Mahindra car
NEW DELHI - Indian 4x4 manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra is developing a new, Mitsubishi Pajero-sized vehicle - code-named Scorpio - for launch by 2000. The engine is being developed by AVL List in Austria. UK-based Hawtal Whiting is working on the body.
Czech trucks down
PRAGUE - The Czech Republic's three largest truck producers, Skoda Liaz, Tatra and Daewoo Avia, will not fulfil their 1998 revenue forecasts. Industry analysts say first-half exports fell 25 percent compared with 1997, and the Czech market has been poor. Of 3,000 trucks sold in the Czech Republic in the period, 1,700 were imported.
Fiat modifies cars for Russia
TICHY, Poland - Fiat Auto Poland has started production of Siena and Palio Weekend models for the Russian market. Three hundred modifications were required for Russian roads. The suspension and chassis were strengthened, and plastic parts changed to cope with extremely low temperatures. The eight-valve and 16-valve, 1.6-liter engines were modified to run on low-octane fuel. The two models will debut at the Moscow auto show this month. Deliveries are planned to start in October.
Hungarians tackle auto theft
BUDAPEST - Hungarian insurance companies are hoping a new National Customs and Excise Office computer network at border crossings will cut their losses from auto theft. Less than one fourth of the 88 cars stolen daily in Hungary are recovered by police. An estimated 70 percent are driven abroad and sold. The new security measures should make it harder for thieves to export cars.
