Daimler-Benz engineers have applied for 340 patents for the S-class.
Innovations include a distance regulating cruise control from Daimler-Benz's Temic subsidiary. Mercedes-Benz expects around 20 percent of customers to order the option.
Other new features include the Keyless Go entry system, which substitutes a card for a traditional key.
New engines have improved fuel economy by 13-17 percent. On the S500, an automotive cylinder cut-out under some road conditions reduces fuel consumption by a further 7 percent.
The new W220 S-class is available in short and long wheelbase versions.
The basic version is 75mm shorter than the outgoing model, 41mm lower and 36mm narrower. It weighs 300kg less.
