Iveco chief executive Giancarlo Boschetti has asked the European Union to ease off on its transport policy. He said it unfairly penalizes heavy trucks.
Boschetto said the EU needs to concentrate instead on harmonizing transport policies within member states.
'There are still too many differences over things like weight limits which needed addressing,' said Boschetti.
'Modern trucks are safer, quieter and more environmentally friendly than they were a few years ago. We need to see the EU implementing incentives to encourage people to take older trucks off the roads. More than 50 percent of the western European truck park is over eight years old.'
Boschetti spoke at the launch of Iveco's new 7.8-liter Cursor diesel engine. The new diesel will be built at an annual rate of 30,000 units a year at Iveco's Bourbon-Lancy plant in France.
