The threat of speed restrictions on German autobahns could have an impact on sales of BMW M cars. Germany's Green party wants a 100kph limit on highways, and the German car industry fears that a limit of 120kph-130kph will result. While such a speed limit is in line with other European countries, it kills a German tradition that has helped sell cars.
'German cars, and BMWs in particular, are popular in other countries because they are considered autobahnfest (speed proven),' said Richard Gaul, BMW's corporate spokesman. 'Speed limits could damage German sales and might have serious long term effects.'
