To the Editor,
I would like to correct some inaccuracies about Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. in the 14 September article 'Donnelly swings the axe in Europe.' In this article, Donnelly Mirrors Ltd., located in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland, is identified as an acquisition that 'has been plagued with quality problems.'
Firstly, Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. is not an acquisition. The plant was established in 1968, and was Donnelly Corporation's first operation in Europe. Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. is, and always has been, a wholly owned Donnelly facility.
Secondly, Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. has not 'been plagued with quality problems.' On the contrary, the plant earned QS9000 registration in February 1997, making it the first Donnelly operation and the first automotive supplier in Ireland to be QS9000-registered. More importantly, Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. services more than 20 automakers, and has good quality ratings with all of them.
The employees at Donnelly Mirrors Ltd. are committed to producing a quality product, and they are reaching their goal. That doesn't mean, however, that we are satisfied with our quality record. We never will be. Any European automotive supplier that rests on its quality achievements is in danger of being surpassed by the suppliers who continue pushing for that next level of quality performance.
