LONDON - Ernie Thompson, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in the UK, died on 17 November. He was 62.
Thompson joined the SMMT in December 1993 after 33 years with Ford Motor Co. He began his career in the Royal Air Force in 1995 as pilot officer, and joined Ford of Britain in 1960 as a graduate trainee. Following various positions in sales, he was appointed director of marketing in 1982 and director of sales in 1984.
'The SMMT will sorely miss Ernie's dedication and leadership in all business dealings,' said Roger King. 'The industry is poorer for his passing.' King, the SMMT's director of public affairs, becomes acting chief executive.
