Eberhard von Kuenheim, top, who built BMW into one of the world's most successful auto companies, retired 18 May as chairman of the group's supervisory board. Von Kuenheim, 71, was chief executive from 1970-1993 and has chaired the supervisory board since May 1993. He will be replaced by deputy chairman Voler Doppelfeld.
