VIENNA - Magna International is facing a battle with Austria's powerful metalworkers' trade union.
The union claims a female worker was sacked after she pushed to establish a council of shop stewards at Magna subsidiary Autec in Styria, Austria.
While Chairman Stronach has to put up with a very strong trade union and shop steward organization at Steyr-Daimler-Puch, some of Magna's new, smaller plants in remote areas have been successfully kept free of shop stewards. One of those was Autec, which produces rearview mirrors.
Stronach claims the workers fired the woman.
In a very heated discussion on Austrian TV, Stronach and the General Secretary of the Union, Rudolf Nuernberger, clashed on the subject.
The union will now try to enforce the institution of the shop stewards councils through the law courts.
